IMSLP MCP server
by smeet666
Let your AI search the free Petrucci sheet music library for works, composers and editions.

This is a small helper that connects your AI chat to IMSLP, the free online library of classical music scores. It is handy if you look up pieces, composers or editions and want the details without clicking around the site yourself. You just ask in plain words and the AI fetches what the library holds.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill, here a live connection to the IMSLP music library. Once it is connected, the AI can look things up on IMSLP for you when you ask, instead of guessing. You do not need an account or a password for this one.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like which nocturnes by Chopin IMSLP holds. The AI passes your question to this helper, which searches the IMSLP pages. The helper reads back the matching works, composers, editions and copyright notes. The AI then turns that into a normal answer in your chat, with links to the pages. It only reads the library, it does not change anything there.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search IMSLP for a work by title, composer or words on the page
- Look up a composer, editor or performer and their life dates
- Read one work's opus number, key, instrumentation and year
- List the editions of a work with publisher, editor and copyright terms
- See the files, formats and download counts for each edition
- Browse works filed under a genre, a key or an instrument
- List the works IMSLP files under one person
Try asking your AI
- “What does IMSLP hold of Chopin's nocturnes?”
- “Read me the page of Erik Satie and tell me when he lived.”
- “List the editions of Debussy's Clair de lune, with who published each one.”
- “Show me works for solo cello in the library.”
What it gives back to you
You get back a normal chat answer: lists of works or people, details like opus number, key and instrumentation, and the editions of a piece with their publishers and copyright notes. Each item usually comes with a link to its IMSLP page. If the library counts nothing, the AI says so rather than inventing numbers.
Before you start
What you need
- A chat app that supports MCP, like Claude Desktop or Cursor
- Node.js 24 or newer, if you install it with npx
- Docker, only if you choose the Docker way
Good to know
It only reads the IMSLP library, so it cannot change or delete anything, but copyright status is shown per country and you should check it yourself before reusing a score.
Install it with your AI
