This is a small helper that connects your AI chat to the Cookbook, the free recipe collection on English Wikibooks. You can ask for recipes by dish or ingredient, read one, and have the amounts recalculated for the number of people you are cooking for. It is handy if you like cooking and want a quick answer without hunting through web pages.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill, here a connection to the Wikibooks Cookbook. Once it is connected, your AI can look up recipes there and do small sums on the amounts for you. You just ask in normal words, and the helper does the looking up.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like find me a carbonara recipe. Your AI passes that to this helper, which searches the Cookbook pages on Wikibooks. The helper brings back a short list with titles and links. If you then ask to read one for six people, the helper fetches that page and recalculates the ingredient amounts. You get the ingredients, the equipment, the steps and any tips, all in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Search recipes by dish name or by ingredient
  • Read one recipe with its ingredients, equipment and steps
  • Rescale a recipe to the number of servings you want
  • List recipes by cuisine, kind of dish or main ingredient
  • Rescale any ingredient list of your own, without searching the wiki
  • See the tips and variations the recipe authors added

Try asking your AI

  • “Find me a carbonara recipe in the Wikibooks Cookbook.”
  • “Read that recipe for six people instead of four.”
  • “What Thai soups does the Cookbook have?”
  • “Scale this ingredient list by 2.5: 200 g flour, 2 eggs, 100 ml milk.”

What it gives back to you

You get back a short list of recipes with titles and links, or one full recipe with its ingredients, equipment, steps and tips. When you ask for a different number of servings, each ingredient comes back with the new amount, and the answer tells you which amounts were rounded. Every result also carries the page address and the licence, so you can credit Wikibooks if you share the recipe.

Before you start

What you need

  • A chat app that can use MCP servers, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Cursor
  • Node.js 24 or newer, if you install it with npx
  • Nothing else: no account and no API key

Good to know

The rescaled amounts are worked out by this helper, not by the recipe author, so rounded figures can be a little off from the original proportions.
