vMem memory server

by soolaugust

Your AI keeps its memory between chats, so it stops forgetting what you told it earlier.

vMem is a memory helper for AI assistants like Claude Code. It saves the important things from your conversations and brings them back when they matter, so your AI does not forget decisions and details when a long chat gets trimmed down. It is handy if you work with an AI for hours or days on the same project.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you in the moment. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one, vMem, is a memory helper: it stores notes about your project and hands them back to your AI when needed. So instead of starting fresh every time, your AI can remember what you decided before.

What this MCP server does

You talk with your AI as usual. Behind the scenes, vMem quietly saves the useful bits, like decisions, rules, and lessons from your session. When you come back later, or when a long chat gets shortened, vMem looks up the parts that fit your current question and hands them to your AI. Your AI then answers with that background in mind. It all runs on your own computer, in the background, without you doing anything.

What you can do with it

  • Keep decisions and rules from earlier chats available in new ones
  • Bring back the right notes when you ask about an older topic
  • Pin an important rule so it is never dropped from memory
  • Share one memory between several AI agents working on the same project
  • Save and restore a session so you can pause and pick up later
  • Run entirely on your own machine with no outside service

Try asking your AI

  • “What did we decide about the database setup last week?”
  • “Remind me of the naming rules we agreed on for this project.”
  • “Pick up where we left off on the login page work.”
  • “What constraints did I give you for the report format?”

What it gives back to you

You get answers that include the older details, as if your AI never forgot them. Sometimes it quietly adds a short note of the relevant memory into the chat so you can see what it used. You may also see it list or summarize saved items when you ask. Mostly, you just notice your AI staying consistent across sessions.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.12 or newer on your computer
  • The Claude Code app (or another AI agent that supports MCP)
  • The nc and flock command line tools, which come with most Linux and Mac systems

Good to know

It saves notes about your conversations on your own computer, so be mindful if you work with private or sensitive information.

Install it with your AI

Add vMem memory server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check vMem memory server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
