SEC EDGAR MCP server

by toolstem

Ask your AI about a company's SEC filings, insider activity, activist investors and red-flag events.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Has TSLA filed any big news lately?”, the SEC EDGAR MCP server connects it to SEC EDGAR, and you get back A short summary in your chat.

This is a helper that lets your AI read public company filings from the SEC, the US stock market regulator. You ask a question in plain English, and it pulls the numbers and events out of SEC EDGAR, the free public filing system. It is handy for anyone who follows public companies, from analysts to curious investors.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to SEC EDGAR, the public database where US companies file their official paperwork. Once connected, your AI can look things up there and bring answers back to you when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like whether a company filed any big news lately. The AI sends that request to this helper, which then reads the public SEC EDGAR records for that company. The helper organizes what it finds into a clean summary with counts, dates and links. Your AI shows you the result right in the chat, so you do not have to dig through filings yourself.

What you can do with it

  • Check how often a company files paperwork compared to its usual pace
  • See whether insiders at a company have filed any recent forms
  • Spot if an activist investor has taken a stake in a company
  • Get a ranked list of a company's most serious 8-K events
  • Compare two to five companies side by side on filing activity
  • Find the exact SEC link for any filing that comes up

Try asking your AI

  • “Has TSLA disclosed any material 8-K events in the last 90 days?”
  • “Show me Apple's recent filing activity and whether it is speeding up.”
  • “Are there any activist investor filings for NVIDIA in the past year?”
  • “Compare the disclosure signals for AAPL, MSFT and GOOGL.”

What it gives back to you

You get back a short structured summary in the chat, with counts, dates, labels and links to the actual SEC filings. For example, it might tell you how many 8-K events happened, how many were flagged as serious, and whether an activist investor has appeared. It can also list the most recent filings with their dates and SEC web addresses. Everything is read-only, so nothing on the SEC side is changed.

Before you start

What you need

  • An MCP client such as the Claude desktop app
  • A crypto wallet funded with a small amount of USDC on Base if you use the hosted endpoint (each call costs a few cents)
  • Nothing else for the hosted version: no SEC account and no API key

Good to know

Each call to the hosted version costs real money in USDC, from a few cents up to fifty cents for the premium tools, so keep an eye on how often your AI calls them.
