MySQL MCP server

This is a small helper program that connects your AI assistant to a MySQL database. MySQL is a common place where apps and websites store their data in tables, a bit like a set of spreadsheets. If you ever need to peek at that data or ask questions about it, this lets your AI do the looking for you.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app or service. This one connects your AI to a MySQL database, so it can list tables, read rows, and run queries when you ask. You stay in the chat, and the helper does the talking to the database.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about your database, like which tables exist or what is inside one of them. The AI uses this helper to send the right request to MySQL. The helper runs the query and hands the result back to the AI. The AI then explains it to you in plain words in the chat. If you turn on read-only mode, it can only look, not change anything.

What it gives back to you
It gives back lists of database and table names, the structure of a table, and the actual rows from your queries. For changes, it tells you how many rows were affected, and for new rows it also gives the new row id. Your AI turns all of that into a short answer or a small table right in the chat.
Before you start
What you need
- A MySQL database you can connect to, with its address, port, database name, username and password
- The go-mcp-mysql program itself, either downloaded from its releases page or built with Go
- An AI app that supports MCP servers, like the Claude desktop app
Good to know
It can change or delete data in your database, so turn on the read-only flag if you only want it to look, and always check what the AI is about to run before saying yes.
