Milvus MCP server

by zilliztech

Lets your AI look inside your Milvus database: list collections, search, add or remove data.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to a Milvus database. Milvus is a place where apps store and search things like text, images, and their meanings as numbers. If you already have a Milvus database and want to ask your AI questions about what is inside it, this is for you.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a little helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app. This one connects your AI to a Milvus database. Once it is running, your AI can look things up in that database or make changes there when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your Milvus database, like what collections exist or what is inside one of them. The AI passes your request to this helper. The helper talks to your Milvus database and gets the answer. Then your AI shows you the result in the chat, in plain words. It can also add new data or remove data if you ask it to.

What you can do with it

  • List all the collections in your Milvus database
  • Search a collection using plain text
  • Search a collection using a vector (a list of numbers that stands for meaning)
  • Run a filter query, like age > 20, on a collection
  • Create a new collection
  • Insert new data into a collection
  • Delete entries from a collection

Try asking your AI

  • “What collections do I have in my Milvus database?”
  • “Search my rag_demo collection for documents about refunds and show me the top 5.”
  • “Create a new collection called support_tickets with 768 dimensions.”
  • “Delete all entries in test where status is closed.”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat: a list of collection names, a table or list of matching rows, or a short confirmation that something was created, added, or deleted. Search results usually include the fields you asked for, like text or an id. If something goes wrong, your AI tells you what the database said.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.10 or newer
  • A running Milvus database (on your computer or somewhere online)
  • uv installed (a small tool for running Python programs)
  • The Claude desktop app or Cursor, if you want to use it there

Good to know

This helper can add and delete data in your Milvus database, so be careful with requests that change or remove things.

Install it with your AI

Add Milvus MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Milvus MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
