ApeRAG MCP server
by apecloud
Let your AI search your own document collections and answer questions from them.

ApeRAG is a tool you run yourself that stores your documents and lets you search them in smart ways. This MCP server is the small bridge that lets your AI assistant ask ApeRAG questions on your behalf. It is handy if you keep a pile of files, notes or reports and want your AI to answer from them instead of guessing.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app. This one connects your AI to your own ApeRAG knowledge base. Once it is connected, your AI can look things up in your documents and bring answers back to the chat when you ask.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question in normal words. The AI passes that question to this helper. The helper talks to your ApeRAG service and searches your collections using several methods at once, including meaning-based search, word-based search and a map of how things relate. ApeRAG sends back the most relevant pieces, and your AI turns them into a clear answer for you.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- List the knowledge collections you have in ApeRAG
- Search your documents by meaning, by exact words, or by how things connect
- Ask a plain question and get an answer built from your own files
- Browse what is inside a collection before searching
- Pull context from your documents into whatever you are writing
- Check which collection is most likely to hold the answer
Try asking your AI
- “What does our refund policy say about opened items?”
- “Search my project notes for anything about the March launch delay.”
- “List the collections I have in ApeRAG.”
- “Summarize what my research papers say about battery cooling.”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, written in normal sentences and based on your documents. You can also get lists of your collections and short excerpts from the matching files. If nothing relevant is found, the AI will usually tell you that instead of making something up.
Before you start
What you need
- A running ApeRAG service (you can start one with Docker on your own computer)
- An API key from your ApeRAG settings (a kind of password for apps)
- Documents already uploaded into an ApeRAG collection
- An AI app that supports MCP servers, such as the Claude desktop app
Good to know
Your API key gives access to your knowledge base, so keep it private and do not paste it into shared chats or public files.
Install it with your AI
Add ApeRAG MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check ApeRAG MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
People who keep their own document collections and want an AI to answer from those files, such as researchers, support teams and analysts.
