SchemaGate MCP server
Lets your AI pick only the database tables a person is allowed to see before writing any SQL.
SchemaGate is a helper for people who ask an AI questions about a database in plain English. Before the AI writes any SQL, SchemaGate checks who is asking and hides the tables that person is not allowed to read. It is handy for anyone working with company databases where some data is private, like salaries or customer details.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another system. This one connects your AI to a database, but with a guard: it looks at who is asking and only shows the tables that person may read. So when you ask a question, the AI never even sees the tables you are not allowed to look at.
What this MCP server does
You type a question in your own words, like which customers owe us money. SchemaGate looks at the database, checks the caller's permissions, and picks only the tables that person is allowed to read. It hands those tables to the AI, the AI writes the SQL, and you get the answer back. Tables the caller cannot read are left out completely, so the AI never writes SQL against them in the first place.
What you can do with it
- Ask questions about a database in plain English
- See only the tables your account is allowed to read
- Get the SQL the AI wrote, so you can check it
- Get the rows that answer your question
- Add short notes to explain what a table really means
- Try it on a sample database first, with no setup
- Connect to Postgres, Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server or SQLite
Try asking your AI
- “Which customers owe us money?”
- “Show me revenue by month for this year”
- “Who reports to whom in the sales team?”
- “Late shipments by carrier last quarter”
What it gives back to you
You get back a short list of the tables that were chosen, the SQL the AI wrote, and the rows that answer your question. If a table was left out because of permissions, you can ask to see why. Everything appears right in the chat, like a small report.
Before you start
What you need
- Python installed on your computer (the README says pip install schemagate)
- A database connection address (a line of text your IT team can give you)
- A model provider and key if you want it to write the SQL for you (optional; you can also paste the prompt into any chat yourself)
Good to know
It reads your database schema and can run SQL if you turn on the answer step, so point it only at databases you are allowed to query.
Install it with your AI
Add SchemaGate MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check SchemaGate MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who needs to ask questions of a company database without seeing data they are not allowed to see, like analysts, support staff, and managers.
