Python Docs MCP server

by ayhammouda

Your AI can look up exact Python standard library docs, by symbol and by version, right in the chat.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What does asyncio.TaskGroup do in Python 3.13?”, on your own computer the Python Docs MCP server works with python docs on your PC, and you get back A short answer from the docs.

This is a small helper that lets your AI read the official Python documentation without opening a browser. You ask a question about Python, and it finds the exact piece of the official docs that answers it. It is handy for anyone writing or learning Python with an AI assistant, even if you are not a developer by trade.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something useful. This one connects your AI to the official Python documentation, stored on your own computer. So when you ask about a Python feature, your AI can look it up in the real docs instead of guessing.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about Python, like what a certain function does or what changed between versions. Your AI uses this helper to search a local copy of the official Python docs. The helper finds the exact item or section you need, for the Python version you care about. Then your AI reads that section and answers you in plain words. Everything happens on your computer, and the helper only reads, it never changes anything.

What you can do with it

  • Look up what a specific Python function or class does
  • Find the right section of the official docs for a topic
  • Check what changed in a Python feature between two versions
  • See which Python versions are available in your local index
  • Check which Python version is installed on your computer
  • Find the official documentation link for a package on PyPI

Try asking your AI

  • “What does asyncio.TaskGroup do in Python 3.13?”
  • “Show me the docs section for pathlib.Path”
  • “What changed about this function between Python 3.11 and 3.12?”
  • “Which Python version am I running, and is it indexed?”

What it gives back to you

You get a short, focused answer taken from the official Python docs, not a whole page dumped into the chat. It can include the matching item, a snippet, or a side by side comparison of two versions. Sometimes it gives you a link to the exact docs section. If you ask about your setup, it tells you which Python version you have and whether it is indexed.

Before you start

What you need

  • The uv tool installed (it runs the helper for you)
  • A one time step to build the local docs index (it downloads the official docs and can take a few minutes)
  • Python 3.12 or newer on your computer
  • Your AI app restarted after you add the helper

Good to know

It only reads the docs, so it cannot change anything, but the first index build downloads files and can take a few minutes.

Install it with your AI

Add Python Docs MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
