Notion MCP server

by Badhansen

Let your AI read and update your Notion to-do list for you, just by asking in plain words.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to a Notion page you use as a to-do list. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to show your tasks, add a new one, or mark something as done, and it will do it in Notion for you. It is handy if you already keep your tasks in Notion and want to manage them by chatting instead of clicking around.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. It cannot see your Notion pages or change anything there. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill, and here that skill is talking to Notion. So when you ask about your to-do list, your AI passes the request to this helper, the helper talks to Notion, and the answer comes back to you in the chat.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your Notion to-do list, like showing what is left today. Your AI sends that request to this helper program running on your computer. The helper then talks to Notion using your own Notion account details. Notion sends back the list of tasks, or makes the change you asked for. Your AI then shows you the result in plain words in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Show all the tasks in your Notion to-do list
  • Add a new task with a short description
  • Mark an existing task as complete
  • Ask your AI what is still open on your list
  • Add several tasks in a row by just describing them

Try asking your AI

  • “Show me all my todos from Notion”
  • “Add a task to call the dentist tomorrow”
  • “Mark the task about the report as done”
  • “What tasks do I still have open?”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, not files. When you ask for your tasks, your AI shows them as a list of items with their names and status. When you add or complete a task, it tells you that the change was made in Notion. If something goes wrong, like a wrong task name, it will say so instead of guessing.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Notion account with access to the page or database you use for tasks
  • A Notion integration token (a kind of password you create on Notion's website)
  • The page or database shared with that integration inside Notion
  • Python 3.11 or newer and the Claude desktop app on your computer

Good to know

It can change your Notion to-do list, so if you ask it to complete or add tasks, check that the change is what you wanted.
