MySQL MCP server
by benborla
Lets your AI look inside a MySQL database and run queries for you, safely and read-only by default.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to a MySQL database. MySQL is a common place where companies keep their data, like orders, customers, or inventory. If you often need answers from that data but do not write code, this lets you just ask your AI in plain words.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your database or your files. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to MySQL, so when you ask a question about your data, the AI can go look it up for you.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like "how many orders did we get last month?" The AI uses this helper to send a query to your MySQL database. The database answers, and the helper passes the result back to the AI. The AI then explains the answer to you in normal words, right in the chat. By default it can only read, not change anything, so nothing gets broken by accident.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Ask questions about your data in plain English
- List the tables and columns in your database
- Run read-only queries and get results back
- Look across several databases in one session
- Hide sensitive personal data in results automatically
- Optionally allow inserts, updates, or deletes if you turn them on
Try asking your AI
- “How many new customers signed up last week?”
- “Show me the tables in this database and what columns they have.”
- “What were the top 5 products by sales last month?”
- “List the 10 most recent orders and their status.”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, usually as a short summary plus a small table of rows and columns. For schema questions, it lists table names and their fields. For data questions, it shows the numbers or records you asked for. If you have write operations turned on, it also tells you what it changed.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js version 20 or newer installed on your computer
- A MySQL database (version 5.7 or newer) that you can reach
- A MySQL username and password with permission to read the data
Good to know
If you turn on the write options, the AI can add, change, or delete rows in your database, so only enable those if you are sure.
Install it with your AI
Add MySQL MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check MySQL MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who needs answers from a company MySQL database but does not write SQL, like analysts, support staff, product managers, or operations folks.
