Container Use MCP server

by dagger

Let your AI coding helper work in its own safe container and branch, so you can run several at once.

Container Use is a small helper that gives your AI coding assistant its own private workspace, called a container, plus its own copy of your project. It is made for people who use AI coding tools like Claude Code or Cursor and want to run more than one at a time without them tripping over each other. If you have ever worried about an AI changing your files by accident, this is for you.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another tool. This one connects your AI to Container Use, which creates a fresh, separate workspace for each task. So when you ask your AI to build something, it does the work in that safe space instead of in your real project folder.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI to build or change something, like a small web app. Your AI then asks Container Use to set up a fresh container and a new git branch just for that job. Container Use runs the commands inside that container and keeps a full history of what happened. When it is done, you get links to see the running app and the code. You can also step into the container's terminal yourself if you want to look around or take over.

What you can do with it

  • Run several AI coding tasks at the same time without them clashing
  • Give each task its own clean workspace and git branch
  • See the exact commands your AI ran and what they printed
  • Open a terminal inside any task's workspace to check or fix things
  • Review or discard a task's work with normal git commands
  • Try risky experiments safely and throw them away if they fail

Try asking your AI

  • “Create a hello world app in Python using Flask”
  • “Add a dark mode toggle to my website and show me the result”
  • “Set up a small API that returns the current time and test it”
  • “Try upgrading this project to the latest version of the framework”

What it gives back to you

You get a short summary in the chat with links to view the running app and browse the code. You also get the full command history and logs, so you can see exactly what your AI did. If something went wrong, you can read the errors and step in. Nothing is hidden behind a vague claim.

Before you start

What you need

  • A computer where you can install command line tools
  • An MCP-compatible AI coding agent such as Claude Code or Cursor
  • Docker running on your machine (Container Use uses containers)

Good to know

It creates and runs containers on your machine and can change files in the git branches it makes, so review its work before merging anything into your main project.

Install it with your AI

Add Container Use MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Container Use MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
