WPF Visual Tree MCP server
by faze79
Let your AI peek inside a running Windows desktop app to find bugs, check buttons and fill forms.

This is a small helper program that lets your AI assistant look inside a running Windows desktop app while it is still open. It works best for developers and testers who deal with WPF programs, though anyone curious enough to poke around a stubborn dialog may enjoy it too. Nothing gets rebuilt or changed in the app itself.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own your AI can only talk. An MCP server is a little bridge program that adds a new ability to your AI. Here that bridge connects your AI to WPF desktop apps running on your machine. So when you ask "why is the Save button greyed out", the AI goes looking inside the actual live app rather than guessing.
What this MCP server does
First you point your AI at a running WPF app. Your AI asks this helper to attach to that app. Then it walks the control tree, reading names, texts and settings. If something seems wrong, such as a label staying blank because a value never arrived, the AI pulls those error messages straight from the app. Finally it tells you what it found, often right next to the lines where the problem lives.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- List all currently running WPF apps on your PC
- Show the whole control tree of a chosen window
- Read every setting stored on a single control
- Find controls by name, by type or by the text shown on screen
- Report broken links between fields and the underlying data
- Take a picture of a window or part of it
- Click buttons and menu items, tick boxes, pick options
Try asking your AI
- “Attach to SalesDashboard.exe and show me the top level of its window”
- “Why did the total field come out empty again? Pull the link problems for that order form”
- “Fill Customer Name with Jane Doe, choose Express shipping and press Place Order”
- “Grab a snapshot of the login panel so we can compare colours tomorrow”
What it gives back to you
Your AI replies in normal chat wording. Expect lists of controls with their labels and states, tables of saved settings, clear notes naming each broken piece along with likely causes, pictures pasted inline when requested, and simple confirmations whenever it clicked or typed somewhere.
Before you start
What you need
- Windows 10 or 11
- .NET 8 Desktop Runtime installed
- One or more WPF applications already running to try it on
- Permission to let the helper load itself quietly into those apps
