iTerm MCP server
by ferrislucas
Lets your AI run commands in your iTerm2 terminal and read what shows up there.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to your iTerm2 terminal on a Mac. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to type commands for you and then tell you what the results mean. It is handy for people who use the terminal but do not want to memorize every command.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app. This one connects your AI to iTerm2, the terminal app on your Mac. So when you ask a question, your AI can actually type in your terminal and read the output back to you.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something that involves the terminal, like checking which files are in a folder. Your AI uses this helper to type the command into your open iTerm2 window. The helper then reads the last few lines of output from that window. Your AI looks at those lines and explains them to you in plain words. You can watch each step happen on your screen as it goes.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Run a command in your open terminal window
- Read the last lines of output from your terminal
- Ask questions about what is currently on your terminal screen
- Send control keys like ctrl-c to stop a running command
- Start and interact with simple interactive programs
- Watch your AI work through a task step by step
Try asking your AI
- “What is currently showing in my terminal?”
- “Run ls -la and tell me what the biggest files are”
- “Check the last 20 lines of output and explain any errors”
- “Send ctrl-c to stop whatever is running”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, based on what your terminal is showing. Your AI can quote the last few lines of output or summarize them for you. It can also tell you how many lines a command produced. The actual commands run in your iTerm2 window, so you can see them happen.
