GridPin is a helper for your AI that looks up addresses and map coordinates. It works fully offline, using one big data file per country that sits on your machine. It is handy if you handle customer addresses, delivery lists, or location data and do not want to send that information to an outside service.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to GridPin, a geocoding tool that runs on your own computer. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to look up an address or a set of coordinates, and it will use GridPin to find the answer for you.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like "where is this address" or "what is at these coordinates". Your AI passes the question to the GridPin helper running on your machine. The helper reads a local data file for the country you picked and finds matches. You get back a ranked list of candidates with latitude, longitude, and a note on how precise the match is. Nothing about your query is sent over the internet, except the one-time download of the country file itself.

What it gives back to you
You get back a list of matches, each with latitude, longitude, a precision label like street or city, and a confidence score. For reverse lookups you also see the distance in meters from your point. For batches, you get one result per address, in the same order you sent them. It all shows up as text in your chat.
Before you start
What you need
- The uvx tool installed on your computer (a small program runner; the GridPin setup guide explains it)
- Enough free disk space for the country file you want, which can be 32 to 677 MB
- An internet connection once, to download the country file
- An MCP client like Claude Desktop, Claude Code, or Cursor
Good to know
Treat street-level and city-level matches as approximate, and check the confidence score before you rely on a result for anything important.
