ThumbGate MCP server

by IgorGanapolsky

Your coding AI checks risky actions against your past thumbs-down feedback before it runs them.

ThumbGate is a small helper that sits between your AI coding assistant and the commands it wants to run. When you tell the AI something went wrong, it remembers that lesson and warns you the next time a similar action comes up. It is handy for anyone who lets an AI agent edit files or run commands and wants a safety net.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another tool. This one connects your AI to ThumbGate, a local safety checker that watches the actions your AI is about to take. When your AI wants to run a command, it asks ThumbGate first, and ThumbGate says allow, warn, or block.

What this MCP server does

You give your AI a task, like cleaning up a project folder. Before the AI runs a command, it asks ThumbGate to check that command. ThumbGate compares the command against lessons you saved earlier from your thumbs-up and thumbs-down feedback. If it matches a known mistake, ThumbGate warns you or blocks it, depending on your settings. Otherwise it lets the action go ahead, and you see the result in your chat.

What you can do with it

  • Check a risky command before your AI runs it
  • Save a thumbs-down lesson so the same mistake gets caught next time
  • Turn a repeated mistake into a prevention rule
  • See a local dashboard of what got blocked or warned
  • List the active rules and lessons you have saved
  • Run a health check on your hooks and setup

What it gives back to you

You get a short verdict in the chat: allow, warn, or block, with the reason and the pattern that matched. It can also show you a list of your saved rules, stats about blocked actions, and a local dashboard page. When you save feedback, it confirms the lesson was stored.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js installed on your computer
  • A coding agent that supports hooks or MCP, like Claude Code or Cursor
  • A terminal where you can run npx commands

Good to know

ThumbGate can block or warn on commands your AI tries to run, so make sure the rules you save are ones you really want enforced.

Install it with your AI

Add ThumbGate MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check ThumbGate MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
