RepoContext MCP server

by ILoveMyJay

Lets your AI read a tidy map of your code project instead of the whole thing, saving space and hiding secrets.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Where is the login token function?”, on your own computer the RepoContext MCP server works with your code project, and you get back A short map of your code.

RepoContext is a helper that gives your AI assistant a smart summary of your code project instead of dumping every file into the chat. It is handy if you work with a large codebase and your AI keeps running out of room or costs too much per question. You do not need to be a programmer to set it up, but it is aimed at people who work with code.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. This one connects your AI to your code project on your computer, so it can look at the files and give you answers about them. When you ask a question, your AI quietly asks this helper, and the helper reads your project and sends back a short, clean summary.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your code project, like where a certain function lives. Your AI passes that question to RepoContext, which is running quietly on your computer. RepoContext reads your project files, keeps only the important parts like function names and short descriptions, and hides things like passwords and secret keys. Then it sends that trimmed-down picture back to your AI, which uses it to answer you. The result is a faster, cheaper answer that does not leak private details.

What you can do with it

  • Get a short map of all the important pieces in your code project
  • Ask your AI to find files related to a specific task you describe
  • Read a single file's outline with just the main parts
  • Read exact lines from a file when you need the full detail
  • Keep secret keys and passwords out of what your AI sees
  • Estimate how much a question will cost across different AI models

Try asking your AI

  • “Give me a map of this project so I can see the main parts”
  • “Which files matter if I want to fix the login token expiring too soon”
  • “Show me the outline of the file that handles payments”
  • “Read lines 40 to 80 of the user settings file”

What it gives back to you

You get back short, readable summaries: a list of files and their main functions, a filtered set of files that match your question, or a single file's outline. When you ask for exact lines, you get just those lines. Everything appears in your chat like a normal answer, and any secret-looking text is replaced with a mask.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js installed on your computer (a free tool that runs small programs)
  • The Claude desktop app or another AI tool that supports MCP servers
  • Your code project saved in a folder on your computer

Good to know

It reads files from your code project, so make sure you are comfortable with your AI seeing that folder, though it does try to hide passwords and secret keys.

Install it with your AI

Add RepoContext MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check RepoContext MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
