Bytesmith MCP server
by laszlopere
Let your AI encode, decode, hash, and generate tokens or keys, all on your own computer.

Bytesmith is a small helper program that gives your AI a toolbox for working with raw data: turning text into hex or Base64, computing hashes and checksums, making secure random tokens, and more. It runs entirely on your own machine, so nothing is sent to a website. It is handy if you often need to convert or check small pieces of data and would rather just ask than hunt for an online tool.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot actually run a hash or convert bytes for you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill, in this case a set of byte and encoding tools. Once Bytesmith is connected, your AI can do those conversions and calculations for you when you ask, right inside the chat.
What this MCP server does
You type a request, like asking for the SHA-256 hash of some text or the Base64 version of a file's contents. Your AI passes that request to Bytesmith, which does the actual math or conversion on your computer. Bytesmith hands the result back to your AI, and your AI shows it to you in the chat. Everything happens locally, so no data leaves your machine. There is also an optional set of tools for Ethereum and blockchain work if you turn it on.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Convert text or data between hex, Base64, Base32, Base58, and other formats
- Compute hashes like SHA-256, CRC checksums, and keyed HMAC tags
- Check a file's checksum against an expected value
- Generate secure random tokens, passwords, and passphrases
- Create UUIDs, ULIDs, and nanoids
- Turn a password into a safe storage string and verify it later
- Derive encryption keys from a password or secret
Try asking your AI
- “What is the SHA-256 hash of the text hello world?”
- “Encode this string as Base64: my secret note”
- “Generate a strong random passphrase of six words”
- “Give me a new UUID version 4”
What it gives back to you
You get the answer right in the chat: a hash string, an encoded value, a list of generated tokens, or a simple yes or no when it checks a checksum or password. For files, it reports the checksum and whether it matched what you expected. Nothing is saved anywhere unless you copy it yourself.
Before you start
What you need
- Python 3.10 or newer
- The uv tool to install and run it (the README shows the commands)
- An MCP-capable AI app like Claude Desktop
Good to know
It can read files on your computer when you ask it to checksum one, and it can generate secrets, so keep those results private.
Install it with your AI
Add Bytesmith MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Bytesmith MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who regularly converts, encodes, or checks small pieces of data, like developers, testers, and people doing light security or blockchain work.
