ViaFrei MCP server

by mavrovde

Let your AI check live German traffic, trains, fuel prices, chargers and weather warnings for you.

ViaFrei is a free helper that connects your AI assistant to live German travel and traffic information. You ask a normal question, like whether the A7 is jammed or when the next train leaves, and your AI answers with real data instead of guessing. It is handy for anyone who drives, takes trains or buses, or plans trips around Germany.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you from what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to a service. This one connects your AI to ViaFrei, which reads official German open data about roads, trains, fuel, charging and weather. Once it is connected, your AI can look things up there for you whenever you ask.

What this MCP server does

You type a question in plain words, in English or German, like whether the A8 is clear or when the next train leaves Hamburg. Your AI sends that question to the ViaFrei helper. The helper reads the live German sources, such as Autobahn traffic reports, train timetables, fuel price feeds and weather warnings. Then it hands the answer back to your AI, which shows it to you in the chat, together with the name of the source it came from.

What you can do with it

  • Check live traffic, jams and closures on German motorways
  • Look up train, bus and tram departures and delays
  • Find fuel prices, EV chargers and hydrogen stations near a place
  • See parking, rest areas and step-free access at stations
  • Read official DWD weather warnings for a town
  • Ask whether you need an emission sticker for a German city
  • Set a watch so your AI tells you when a closure or jam appears

Try asking your AI

  • “Is the A7 clear right now?”
  • “When does the next train leave Hamburg Hbf?”
  • “Where is diesel cheapest near Kassel?”
  • “Is there a weather warning for Kiel?”

What it gives back to you

You get a written answer in the chat, in the language you asked in. It often comes as a short list, like the nearest chargers with distance and price, or the next departures with times. Every answer names its source, for example the Autobahn GmbH or the DWD, so you can check anything important. Sometimes it also tells you which source it could not read, instead of pretending everything is fine.

Before you start

What you need

  • An AI assistant that supports MCP connections, such as the Claude desktop app

Good to know

The answers are written by an AI from live data and can be wrong or out of date, so check anything important, like a closure or a departure, against the source each answer names.

Install it with your AI

Add ViaFrei MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check ViaFrei MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
