Playwright MCP server
by microsoft
Lets your AI open web pages in a real browser, click, type, and read what is on the screen.

This is a helper that gives your AI its own web browser. Instead of just talking about a website, your AI can actually open it, click buttons, fill in forms, and tell you what it sees. It is handy for anyone who checks websites, fills in the same forms over and over, or wants to test a page without doing every click by hand.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot open a browser or visit a website. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill. This one connects your AI to a real web browser, so when you ask it to look at a page or click something, it can actually do it for you.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like "open this page and tell me what is on it". The AI sends that request to this helper. The helper starts a real browser, goes to the page, and reads the page the way a screen reader would, by looking at the structure and labels rather than taking a picture. It then sends the useful parts back to your AI, which explains the result to you in the chat.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Open a web page and describe what is on it
- Click buttons and links on a page
- Type text into search boxes and forms
- Fill in and submit a form for you
- Read the text and headings of a page
- Check what happens after you click something
- Take a screenshot of the page when you ask
Try asking your AI
- “Open example.com and tell me what the main heading says”
- “Go to our company contact page and fill in the name and email fields with test data”
- “Search for the phrase quarterly report on this site and list the first three results”
- “Open this page and tell me if the login button is visible”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain chat: a summary of what is on the page, a list of links or headings, or a note that a button was clicked or a form was submitted. If you ask for a screenshot, you get an image in the chat. When the AI changes something on a page, like filling a field, it tells you what it did.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js 18 or newer installed on your computer
- An MCP client such as VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Desktop, or Goose
- A web browser on your computer for the helper to control
Good to know
This helper can click, type, and submit things on real websites, so be careful when you point it at pages where you are logged in or where a wrong click could change or send something.
Install it with your AI
Add Playwright MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Playwright MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
People who check or test websites, fill in web forms often, or want their AI to look at pages for them without clicking through everything by hand.
