Codebase Index MCP server
by MikeRecognex
Lets your AI map out a code project so it can find functions, classes and knock-on effects fast.

This is a helper for your AI that builds a map of a code project. Instead of reading whole files, your AI can look up one function, one class, or ask what else would break if you changed something. It is handy for developers and anyone who has to work inside a codebase, even a big one.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something, and here that something is a code project on your computer. Once it is connected, your AI can ask this helper questions about the code, and the helper answers from a pre-built map instead of reading every file. You just ask in normal words, and the AI does the looking up for you.
What this MCP server does
First, this helper reads through the code files in your project and writes down what is inside: functions, classes, imports, and who calls whom. It keeps that map in a small cache file so it does not have to start over each time. When you ask your AI something about the code, the AI passes your question to this helper, and the helper answers from the map. If you edit files in a git project, the helper notices the changes and quietly updates only those parts. You get short, focused answers back instead of giant walls of code.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Find where a function or class is defined, and on which line
- Show the full source of one function or one class
- List the functions, classes and imports in a file or the whole project
- See what a piece of code depends on, and what depends on it
- Check what would be affected if you changed a function
- Trace the shortest path between two pieces of code
- Search across all files with a pattern
Try asking your AI
- “Where is the function called compile defined in this project?”
- “Show me the full source of the TestCase class.”
- “What would break if I changed the login function?”
- “List all the classes in this project with their line numbers.”
What it gives back to you
You get short, focused answers in the chat: a file name and line number, a small list of functions or classes, or the source of one function. For impact questions you get a list of the things that depend on your code, split into direct and indirect. Everything comes back as plain text you can read right away, not as a file to download.
Before you start
What you need
- Python 3.11 or newer installed on your computer
- The mcp-codebase-index package installed (a single pip install command)
- The folder path of the project you want it to index
- A git repository if you want the automatic updates on edits
Good to know
It reads the code files in the folder you point it at, so only aim it at projects you are allowed to share with your AI.
Install it with your AI
Add Codebase Index MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Codebase Index MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Developers and anyone who works inside a code project and wants their AI to navigate it without reading every file.
