Resume MCP server

by mnoomnoo

Lets your AI search your own resume and cover letter files by skill, company, or education, and pull out achievements.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Which of my resumes highlight Kubernetes experience?”, on your own computer the Resume MCP server works with your resume folder, and you get back matching resumes and skills.

This is a small helper program that connects your AI to a folder of your own resume and job application documents. Once it is set up, your AI can read those files and answer questions about them, instead of you copying and pasting text into the chat. It is handy if you keep several versions of your resume and cover letters and lose track of what is in each one.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one connects your AI to a folder of your resume documents on your own computer. When you ask a question, the AI asks this helper to look through those files and bring back the answer.

What this MCP server does

You point the server at a folder that holds your resumes, cover letters, and application notes. It reads each file, whether it is a Word document, a PDF, a Markdown file, or a plain text file, and pulls out the useful parts: your contact details, jobs, education, skills, and side projects. When you ask your AI something, the AI sends that question to this helper, the helper searches the files, and the answer comes back into your chat. If you edit or add a file, the server notices and updates its index on its own. It only reads your files, it never changes or deletes them.

What you can do with it

  • Find which of your resumes mention a particular skill
  • List the achievements you have written down across your jobs
  • Look up which companies and roles appear in your documents
  • Search your education history across all your files
  • Rank your resumes against a job description you paste in
  • Count how often each skill shows up across your collection
  • Pull details from a cover letter draft you wrote earlier

Try asking your AI

  • “Which of my resumes highlight Kubernetes experience?”
  • “What achievements have I listed across my backend roles?”
  • “Draft a cover letter drawing from my work at Acme Corp”
  • “Rank my resumes against this job description and tell me which fits best”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in plain chat: lists of matching resumes, names of companies and roles, skill counts, or short summaries of what it found. For searches it also tells you how many results there are and whether more are available. When you ask it to rank resumes, it gives you a best-match-first list with scores. It never shows you raw file contents unless you ask for a specific resume.

Before you start

What you need

  • A folder on your computer with your resume, cover letter, and application files
  • Python 3.12 or newer, or Docker if you prefer that route
  • An AI app that supports MCP servers, such as Claude Desktop or Claude Code

Good to know

It reads the documents in the folder you point it at, so keep that folder to resumes and application files you are comfortable having your AI look through.
