EditorConfig MCP server
by neilberkman
Lets your AI tidy up code files so they match your project's formatting rules.

This is a small helper that formats your code files using the .editorconfig rules already in your project. It is handy if you use an AI assistant to write code and keep getting little complaints from your linter about spacing or blank lines. Instead of fixing those by hand, you let this helper clean things up.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. This one connects your AI to your project's .editorconfig rules, so it can look at a file and tidy it up to match. You ask in plain words, and the helper does the formatting work for you.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI to format a file, or a group of files, in your project. The AI passes that request to this helper. The helper reads your project's .editorconfig rules, opens the file, and fixes things like trailing spaces or inconsistent line endings. It then tells your AI which files it changed and how big they are. You get back a short confirmation in the chat.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Format a single file so it matches your project rules
- Format many files at once using a pattern like all .js files
- Clean up trailing spaces and messy blank lines
- Fix inconsistent line endings in generated code
- Get a list of which files were changed
Try asking your AI
- “Format src/index.js using our editorconfig rules”
- “Tidy up all the JavaScript files in this project”
- “Fix the formatting on the file I just created”
- “Clean up every file that matches src/**/*.ts”
What it gives back to you
You get a short answer in the chat, like a success message, the file path, and how many bytes the file is now. If you asked for many files, you get a count and a list of the file names. If something went wrong, you get a plain message with a hint about what to try next.
