Neon MCP server
by neondatabase
Let your AI create and manage Neon Postgres databases for you in plain English.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to Neon, a service that runs Postgres databases in the cloud. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to create a database, add tables, or look at your data, and it will do the clicking and typing for you. It is handy for anyone who works with data but does not want to write database code by hand.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot reach out to your Neon account or touch your databases. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill, and here that skill is talking to Neon. So when you ask for something like a new database, the AI passes your request to this helper, and the helper does the work in Neon for you.
What this MCP server does
You type a request in plain words, like creating a database or adding a column to a table. Your AI sends that request to the Neon MCP server. The server translates it into the right calls to Neon and carries them out. Then it sends the result back, and your AI shows it to you in the chat. You never have to write SQL or click through the Neon website yourself.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Create a new Postgres database and name it
- Add tables and columns to an existing database
- Run a query and show you the rows it found
- List all your Neon projects and what is in them
- Describe the structure of a table
- Run a migration to change a table's shape
- Look at slow queries and suggest improvements
Try asking your AI
- “Create a new Postgres database called my-database, then add a users table with id, name, email, and password columns.”
- “Run a migration on my-project that adds a created_at column to the users table.”
- “Give me a summary of all my Neon projects and what data is in each one.”
- “Show me the schema of the orders table in my shop project.”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, usually as short summaries or lists. For example, it might list your projects with their names and sizes, or show the rows from a query in a small table. When it makes a change, like creating a database or adding a column, it tells you what it did. Sometimes it hands back a connection string or a schema description you can copy.
Before you start
What you need
- A Neon account (free to start)
- An MCP client app, like Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code, or Claude Desktop
- Node.js version 18 or newer if you use the quick setup command
- A Neon API key if you choose the API key setup instead of OAuth
Good to know
This helper can create, change, and delete databases, so always read what your AI plans to do before you say yes, and avoid using it on live production data.
Install it with your AI
Add Neon MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Neon MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
People who work with data but are not database experts, like analysts, product managers, and developers who want to move faster without writing SQL by hand.
