mcp-recon MCP server
by nickpending
Ask your AI to check a website's status, headers, certificate, and network owner in plain words.

mcp-recon is a small helper that lets your AI look at websites the way a security person would. You ask a normal question about a domain, and it goes and checks the site for you. It is handy for people who do security checks, run websites, or just want to know what is behind a web address.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another service. This one connects your AI to web reconnaissance tools, so it can look up details about a domain or an IP address when you ask. You stay in the chat, and the helper does the checking behind the scenes.
What this MCP server does
You type a question about a website or an IP address. Your AI passes that request to this helper. The helper uses two well known tools, httpx and asnmap, to look at the site or the network. Then it sends the results back, and your AI explains them to you in the chat. There are three modes: a quick check, a full check, and a network owner lookup.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Check if a website is up and what status code it returns
- See which web server and IP address a site uses
- Inspect security headers and TLS certificate details
- Detect technologies and see a preview of the page
- Look up who owns an IP address, an ASN, or an organization
- Run a quick scan or a full scan depending on how much detail you need
Try asking your AI
- “Using quick http recon, what's the status code for example.com?”
- “Using full http recon, what certificates is www.google.com using?”
- “Who owns ASN 14421?”
- “What server and IP is behind microsoft.com?”
What it gives back to you
You get a plain answer in the chat, not a file. For a quick scan, that might be the status code, the server name, and the IP address. For a full scan, you also get certificate details, headers, technologies, and a short preview of the page. For an ASN lookup, you get the organization name and country.
Before you start
What you need
- Docker installed on your computer
- The Claude desktop app or another AI tool that supports MCP
- A free API key from ProjectDiscovery (a kind of password for their service; you sign up on their site to get one)
Good to know
Only scan domains you own or have permission to test, and remember that the full scan pulls the whole page content, so use it carefully.
Install it with your AI
Add mcp-recon MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check mcp-recon MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Security analysts, bug bounty hunters, and anyone who runs or checks websites and wants quick answers without leaving the chat.
