Semiotic MCP server

by nteract

Let your AI suggest, build, and check React charts for your data, then hand you ready-to-use chart code.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Turn my sales data into a chart I can use”, the Semiotic MCP server works in steps: picks the right chart, then builds and checks the chart, then draws a preview, and you get back chart picture and code.

Semiotic is a charting library for React, and this MCP server lets your AI helper work with it directly. Instead of guessing at chart code, your AI can look up the right chart, build a setup, check it for common mistakes, and hand you something you can paste into your project. It is handy if you build dashboards or reports and want a head start on the visuals.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot open a charting library or check whether the chart code it wrote actually makes sense. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill, and here that skill is working with Semiotic, the React chart library. Once it is connected, your AI can ask Semiotic for chart options, build a chart setup, and test it before showing you the result.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI what you want to show, like monthly sales by region. The AI uses this helper to look at Semiotic's list of charts and pick ones that fit your data. The helper builds a chart setup and checks it for common problems, like a misleading axis or values that would break the math. Then it renders the chart to an image so you can see what it looks like. You get back the chart picture plus the code and notes on anything that needs fixing.

What you can do with it

  • Suggest chart types that fit a dataset you describe
  • Build a chart setup from your data and check it for mistakes
  • Render a chart to an image so you can preview it
  • Point out chart problems like misleading axes or bad scales
  • Look up the settings each chart type accepts
  • Turn a Vega-Lite chart spec into a Semiotic chart

Try asking your AI

  • “Here is my sales data by month and region. What chart should I use and can you build it?”
  • “Render a bar chart of these category totals and show me what it looks like”
  • “Check this line chart setup for anything misleading before I publish it”
  • “What settings does the SankeyDiagram component accept?”

What it gives back to you

You get back a picture of the chart, the code to paste into your React project, and a short list of any problems found. If something is wrong, the notes explain what to change in plain words. If everything checks out, you just get the chart and the code ready to use.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js installed on your computer (the free program that runs these helper tools)
  • An MCP client like the Claude desktop app or another AI tool that supports MCP servers

Good to know

The AI can generate chart code and render images, but you should still review the chart and its labels before publishing, since it may not catch every misleading design choice.

Install it with your AI

Add Semiotic MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Semiotic MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
