GitHub Gist MCP server

by ofershap

Let your AI create, read, update, and search your GitHub Gists for you.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to GitHub Gists. Gists are like little online notepads where people keep code snippets and short notes. If you save snippets to Gists, this lets you manage them by just asking your AI in plain words.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app. This one connects your AI to GitHub Gists, so it can look up your gists, create new ones, or change them when you ask. You do not need to open GitHub in a browser or copy links around.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI what you want, like saving a snippet or finding an old gist. The AI passes that request to this helper. The helper talks to GitHub using your own GitHub account. GitHub sends back the gist or confirms the change, and the AI shows you the result right in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • List your gists, including the ones you starred
  • Create a new gist, public or secret
  • Read a gist and see its file contents
  • Update a gist description or file contents
  • Delete a gist you no longer need
  • Star or unstar a gist

Try asking your AI

  • “List my recent gists”
  • “Create a secret gist called auth-middleware.ts with this code”
  • “Show me gist abc123 and its contents”
  • “Update the description of gist abc123 to say login helper”
  • “Delete gist abc123”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, like a list of your gists with their names and links, or the full contents of one gist. When you create or change something, the AI tells you what it did and often gives you the gist link. For deletes, it confirms the gist is gone.

Before you start

What you need

  • A GitHub account
  • A GitHub personal access token with the gist scope (a kind of password for apps; you create it for free in your GitHub settings)
  • The Claude desktop app, Cursor, or VS Code Copilot
  • Node.js installed on your computer (the helper runs through npx)

Good to know

It can delete your gists and change their contents, so double check before you say yes to a delete or update.

Install it with your AI
