GLEIF MCP server

by olgasafonova

Lets your AI look up companies in the official global LEI database and check who owns whom.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Look up LEI HWUPKR0MPOU8FGXBT394”, the GLEIF MCP server connects it to GLEIF database, and you get back company details.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to GLEIF, the official worldwide database of Legal Entity Identifiers (LEIs). An LEI is a 20-character code that identifies a company in financial transactions, a bit like a company's passport number. It is handy if you work in finance, compliance, legal, or procurement and often need to check who a company really is.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to the GLEIF database, so when you ask about a company, your AI can actually look it up instead of guessing. You just ask in normal words, and the helper fetches the real record for you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like "look up this LEI" or "find the LEI for Deutsche Bank". Your AI passes that request to this helper program running quietly in the background. The helper then talks to GLEIF's public database over the internet and pulls back the matching company record. Your AI reads that record and shows it to you in the chat as a clear answer or a small table. Repeat questions come back almost instantly because recent results are kept in a short local memory.

What you can do with it

  • Look up a company's full details from its 20-character LEI code
  • Check whether an LEI is valid and still active
  • Search for a company by name and page through the results
  • Find a bank's LEI from its BIC or SWIFT code
  • Find the company behind a stock or bond from its ISIN code
  • Trace parent companies, subsidiaries, and ultimate owners
  • Check several LEIs at once in a single request

Try asking your AI

  • “Look up LEI HWUPKR0MPOU8FGXBT394”
  • “Search for Deutsche Bank and show me page 2”
  • “Find the LEI for BIC DEUTDEFF”
  • “Who is the ultimate parent of this company, LEI 549300GKFG0RYRRQ1414”

What it gives back to you

You get back the company record: legal name, country, city, entity status, registration status, and the next renewal date. Searches come back as a list of matching companies with page numbers so you can move through them. Validation questions give you a simple yes or no plus the reason. Ownership questions show the related companies, such as the parent or the subsidiaries.

Before you start

What you need

  • A supported AI tool such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, or Windsurf
  • The server program downloaded from the releases page, or Go 1.25+ if you prefer to build it yourself

Good to know

It only reads from the public GLEIF database, so it cannot change or delete anything, but the data comes from an outside source and can be a day behind for very new LEIs.

Install it with your AI

Add GLEIF MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
