DataLink MCP server

by pilat

Let your AI look at your PostgreSQL, MySQL or SQLite databases and run safe queries for you.

DataLink is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to databases like PostgreSQL, MySQL and SQLite. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI questions about your data in plain English and it will look things up for you. It is handy for anyone who has data in a database but does not want to write SQL by hand.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to your databases, so it can look at tables, read rows and run queries when you ask. You set it up once, and after that your AI just uses it in the background.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like how many orders came in last week. The AI uses this helper to talk to the database you configured. The helper runs a safe query, gets the rows back, and hands them to the AI. The AI then explains the result to you in the chat, as a summary or a small table. It can also describe what tables exist and what columns they have, so the AI knows what it is working with.

What you can do with it

  • List the databases you have connected
  • List tables in a database with their row counts
  • Describe a table's columns, indexes and foreign keys
  • Run SELECT queries to read data
  • Run INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE to change data when allowed
  • Show the execution plan for a query so you can see how it runs

Try asking your AI

  • “List all the tables in my analytics database with their row counts”
  • “Describe the orders table so I can see its columns and keys”
  • “How many new customers signed up last month in the inventory database”
  • “Show me the ten most recent rows in the events table”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat: lists of tables, descriptions of columns, or rows of data shown as a small table or summary. If you ask it to change something, it tells you what it changed. There is a size limit, so very large results come back trimmed to about 100 rows.

Before you start

What you need

  • A database you can reach, such as PostgreSQL, MySQL or SQLite
  • The connection details for that database (the address, username and password)
  • An MCP client like Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor or Cline

Good to know

The execute tool can change or delete rows in your database, so use the READONLY setting on any database you do not want touched.

Install it with your AI

Add DataLink MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check DataLink MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
