Tilt MCP server

by rrmistry

Lets your AI check Tilt resources, read logs, and rebuild or restart services for you.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What is happening with my backend service?”, on your own computer the Tilt MCP server works with tilt on your computer, and you get back A plain answer in the chat.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to Tilt, the tool developers use to run and watch their apps while they build them. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to look at a service, read its logs, or kick off a rebuild, and it will do it for you. It is most useful if you already work with Tilt every day.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app. This one connects your AI to Tilt, so it can look up your services and do things there when you ask. You set it up once, and after that your AI just knows how to talk to Tilt.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like "what is happening with my backend service?" The AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper talks to Tilt running on your computer, gathers the answer, and hands it back. Your AI then shows you the result in plain words, like a list of services, some log lines, or a short summary. If you ask it to rebuild or restart something, the helper tells Tilt to do that too.

What you can do with it

  • List all your running Tilt services and their status
  • Read the recent logs from a specific service
  • Filter logs to find errors or a specific request ID
  • Get detailed information about one service
  • Trigger a service to rebuild or update
  • Turn services on or off
  • Wait until a service is ready or up to date

Try asking your AI

  • “List all my Tilt resources and tell me which ones are not healthy”
  • “Show me the last 100 lines of logs from the backend-api service”
  • “Find any errors in the frontend logs”
  • “Rebuild the backend-tests service and tell me when it is ready”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, not files. That usually means a list of your services with their status, a chunk of log lines, or a short description of one service. If you asked for an action like a rebuild or a restart, it tells you whether it worked. Everything is shown as normal text you can read right away.

Before you start

What you need

  • Tilt installed and running on your computer
  • An MCP-compatible AI app such as Claude Desktop
  • Python 3.10 or newer if you install it without Docker
  • Docker if you use the recommended Docker setup

Good to know

It can change your Tilt environment: it can rebuild services, and turn services on or off, so ask before letting it act on anything important.

Install it with your AI

Add Tilt MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Tilt MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
