SchemaCrawler MCP server

by schemacrawler · official

Lets your AI look at your database's structure so it can write correct SQL and answer questions about your tables.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What does the column prefix cust_ mean?”, the SchemaCrawler MCP server connects it to Your database, and you get back plain answers and ready-to-use SQL.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to a relational database, the kind of database that stores information in tables with rows and columns. It lets the AI look at how your database is built so it can help you write SQL and answer questions about your data. It is handy for anyone who works with a database but does not have the table layout memorized.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app or service. This one connects your AI to a relational database, so the AI can look at the tables and columns for you. When you ask a question, the AI uses this helper to peek at the database structure and then answers you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about your database, like what a certain column name means or how to write a query. The AI sends that request to this helper program. The helper talks to your database and reads its structure, the tables, columns, and how they relate. It sends that information back to the AI. The AI then gives you a clear answer or a piece of SQL that actually matches your database.

What you can do with it

  • Ask what a table or column is for
  • Get SQL that matches your real table and column names
  • Find out how tables are connected to each other
  • Check what columns exist in a table before writing a query
  • Understand confusing column prefixes or naming
  • Explore an unfamiliar database you just got access to

Try asking your AI

  • “What does the column prefix cust_ mean in this database?”
  • “Write me a SQL query that lists all orders from last month.”
  • “Which tables are related to the customers table?”
  • “What columns does the invoices table have?”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in plain chat, like an explanation of what a column means or a list of tables and columns. When you ask for SQL, it gives you a query written with your real table and column names, ready to copy. It can also describe how tables connect to each other. Everything comes back as text in the conversation, not as files.

Before you start

What you need

  • A relational database you can connect to, such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, or Oracle
  • The connection details for that database, like its address and a username and password
  • The Claude desktop app or another AI tool that supports MCP servers

Good to know

It reads your database structure, so only connect it to databases you are allowed to share with your AI tool.

Install it with your AI

Add SchemaCrawler MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check SchemaCrawler MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
