by SVerITG

Gives your AI a private, local memory of your papers, notes and meetings, with cited answers.

Metis is a research helper that runs on your own computer and plugs into Claude. It remembers your papers, notes, meetings and ideas, and links them together so your AI can answer with real citations from your own library. It is handy for researchers, analysts and anyone who reads a lot and wants their AI to actually know their work.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It forgets everything the moment you close the window. An MCP server is a small helper program that runs quietly in the background and gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something. Here, that helper connects Claude to your own research library and memory, so when you ask a question, the AI can look things up in your files and answer with sources instead of guessing.

What this MCP server does

You ask Claude a question in plain language, like you normally would. Claude passes the request to Metis, which runs in the background on your machine. Metis looks through your indexed papers, notes, meeting transcripts and ideas to find what is relevant. It also links related items together, so a paper from last year can surface while you write something today. Then Claude gives you a plain answer with citations pointing back to your own documents.

What you can do with it

  • Ask questions and get answers cited from your own indexed papers and notes
  • Capture ideas, meeting notes and journal entries so they are remembered and linked
  • Find connections between a new idea and things you saved months ago
  • Get a morning brief of new papers matching your topics
  • Ask which of your documents cover a specific method or question
  • Keep a project-aware memory so you do not re-explain your context each session
  • Route a request to a specialist skill, such as a writing partner or methods coach

Try asking your AI

  • “What do my own papers say about surveillance methods, with page references?”
  • “Connect this new idea about a monitoring approach to anything I saved before.”
  • “Summarise my meeting notes from last month and link them to related papers.”
  • “Do I have anything in my library that covers this method, and if not, say so.”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, written in plain language. Where the answer comes from your library, it includes citations at document and page level, so you can check the source. It can also return lists of related items, meeting summaries, and short briefs. When something is not in your library, it tells you rather than making something up.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Claude desktop app or Claude Code
  • A folder of your own papers, reports or notes to index
  • An Anthropic API key only if you want scheduled tasks to run while you are away (optional)
  • A computer where you can install and run a small background program

Good to know

It reads your private papers, notes and meeting transcripts, so only point it at folders you are comfortable having indexed, and remember that the text you send for analysis goes to the Anthropic API while everything else stays on your machine.

Install it with your AI

Add Metis MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Metis MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
