Trino MCP server

by tuannvm

Ask your AI questions about your Trino data and get real answers from your tables.

This is a small helper program that connects your AI assistant to Trino, a tool companies use to run fast queries on large amounts of data. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI questions in plain English and it will look things up in your actual data for you. It is handy for anyone who works with data but does not want to write SQL by hand.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another system. This one connects your AI to Trino, your company's data query engine. So when you ask a question, the AI can go and look things up in Trino and bring the answer back to you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question in normal words, like how many orders came in last month. The AI uses this helper to send a query to your Trino setup. Trino runs the query against your connected data sources and sends the results back. The helper passes those results to your AI, which explains them to you in the chat. You can also ask it to list what data is available or describe a table before you query it.

What you can do with it

  • Run a SQL query against your Trino data and see the results
  • List all the catalogs (top-level data sources) available in Trino
  • List the schemas inside a catalog
  • List the tables inside a schema
  • Show the columns and types of a specific table
  • Explain how a query will run before you execute it

Try asking your AI

  • “How many rows are in the orders table in hive.analytics?”
  • “List all the catalogs available in Trino”
  • “Show me the columns in the customers table in hive.marts”
  • “Explain what this query does: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM sales WHERE region = 'EU'”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, usually as a short summary plus a table of results. When you ask about data structure, you get lists of catalogs, schemas, tables, or columns. When you run a query, you see the rows that came back. When you ask for an explanation, you get a plain description of how the query will run.

Before you start

What you need

  • Access to a Trino server (your company usually provides this)
  • The host address and username for that Trino server
  • A password or token if your Trino setup requires one
  • The Claude desktop app or another AI app that supports MCP

Good to know

This helper can run queries that read your company data, so make sure you are allowed to see whatever you ask about.
