Anki MCP server
by ujisati
Let your AI look at and change your Anki flashcards, decks, and notes for you.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Anki, the flashcard app. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to find cards, add notes, or move cards between decks, and it will do it in your Anki collection. It is handy if you study with Anki and want to skip a lot of clicking.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app. This one connects your AI to Anki on your own computer, through a common Anki add-on called AnkiConnect. So when you ask about your flashcards, the AI can actually look them up or change them in Anki instead of just talking about them.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about your Anki collection, like how many cards are in a deck or what is on a certain note. The AI passes your request to this helper program. The helper talks to AnkiConnect, which is running inside your Anki app on your computer. AnkiConnect does the work in Anki, and the answer or the change comes back to your AI, which tells you in the chat.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- List all your decks and their names
- Find notes or cards with a search query
- Add new notes or many notes at once
- Update the fields or tags on existing notes
- Move cards to a different deck
- Suspend or unsuspend cards
- Delete notes or decks you no longer want
Try asking your AI
- “List all my Anki decks.”
- “Find notes in my Spanish deck that contain the word travel.”
- “Add a new note to my Biology deck with the front Mitochondria and the back Powerhouse of the cell.”
- “Move all cards in my Old History deck to my Archive deck.”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain chat: lists of deck names, note details, card details, or a short confirmation that something was added, changed, or deleted. For example, if you ask for your decks, you will see the names listed. If you ask to add a note, the AI will tell you it was created.
Before you start
What you need
- The Anki desktop app installed on your computer
- The AnkiConnect add-on installed inside Anki
- Python 3.8 or newer
- uv (a tool for running Python programs, optional but recommended)
Good to know
This helper can change or delete your notes, cards, and decks, so it is a good idea to back up your Anki collection before letting your AI make big changes.
Install it with your AI
Add Anki MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Anki MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
People who study with Anki and want to manage their flashcards by talking to their AI instead of clicking around.
