Codex MCP server
by x51xxx
Lets your AI read, explain, and edit your code files by handing the work to Codex CLI.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Codex CLI, a coding tool from OpenAI. Once it is set up, you can point your assistant at files on your computer and ask it to explain, review, or rewrite them. It is handy for anyone who works with code and wants a second pair of eyes without leaving the chat.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another tool. This one connects your AI to Codex CLI, a coding assistant that runs on your computer. So when you ask about a file, your AI passes the request to this helper, the helper talks to Codex, and you get the answer back in the chat.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about your code, like explaining a file or fixing a bug. Your AI sends that request to this helper. The helper runs Codex CLI on your machine, pointing it at the files you mentioned with the @ symbol. Codex reads the code, thinks about it, and sends back an explanation, a suggested change, or a new version of the file. The helper passes that answer back to your AI, which shows it to you.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Explain what a file or folder of code does
- List the dependencies in a project file
- Suggest and apply edits to your code
- Review your recent changes and point out problems
- Run a coding task in a safe sandbox and check it worked
- Brainstorm ideas using structured methods like SCAMPER
- Generate or edit images through Codex's image tool
Try asking your AI
- “explain the architecture of @src/”
- “analyze @package.json and list dependencies”
- “ask codex sessionId:"my-project" prompt:"now add error handling”
- “brainstorm ways to optimize CI/CD using SCAMPER method”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain text in the chat: explanations, lists, code snippets, or a summary of changes made. If you asked for edits, you see the new code or a description of what changed. Some tools also report file details like image size or whether a background is transparent. Everything shows up right where you are chatting, no need to switch apps.

Good to know
It can edit files on your computer, so review suggested changes before accepting them and keep backups of important work.
Install it with your AI
Add Codex MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Codex MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Developers, analysts, and anyone who works with code files and wants an AI to help read, review, or edit them.
