YDB MCP server

by ydb-platform · official

Ask your AI to look up and query data in your YDB database using plain English.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Show me the first 10 rows from the orders table”, the YDB MCP server connects it to YDB database, and you get back your answer in the chat.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to a YDB database. YDB is a database service where companies keep their data. If your team stores information in YDB, this lets you ask your AI questions about that data instead of writing database code yourself.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your database or run anything there. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill, and this one gives it a connection to YDB. Once it is set up, your AI can look things up and run queries in your YDB database when you ask it to.

What this MCP server does

You type a question or request in your AI chat, like asking what is in a certain table. Your AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper then talks to your YDB database, runs the query, and brings the result back. Your AI shows you the answer in the chat, as a table or a short summary. Everything happens through the connection you set up once.

What you can do with it

  • Run a SQL query against your YDB database
  • Run a query with values filled in safely
  • See the execution plan for a query before running it
  • List what is inside a folder in your database
  • Get details about a table or path, like its structure
  • Check whether the connection to your database is working

Try asking your AI

  • “List the tables in the /local directory of my YDB database”
  • “Show me the first 10 rows from the orders table”
  • “Explain the plan for this query: SELECT * FROM users WHERE id = 5”
  • “Is my YDB connection working right now?”

What it gives back to you

It gives back the results of your query, usually as rows and columns shown in the chat. It can also return a list of items in a folder, details about a table, or an execution plan. For a status check, it tells you whether the connection is fine. Your AI turns all of this into a readable answer for you.

Before you start

What you need

  • A YDB database and its connection address (called an endpoint)
  • The database path, like /local
  • Login and password, an access token, or a service account key file, depending on how your database is set up
  • An AI app that supports MCP, like the Claude desktop app

Good to know

By default it can only read your data, but if you turn on write mode it can change or delete things in your database, so only enable that when you really mean to.

Install it with your AI

Add YDB MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check YDB MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.

Who it's for

Anyone who works with data stored in YDB and wants to ask questions about it in plain language, without writing database code.
