SQLite MCP server

by Aderali06

Lets your AI look inside a local SQLite database file and answer questions about the data, read only.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to a SQLite database file saved on your own computer. It is handy if you keep data in a SQLite file and want to ask questions about it in plain English instead of writing database queries yourself. It only reads, so nothing in your file can be changed.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one extra skill. This helper gives it a connection to a SQLite database file on your machine. Once it is set up, the AI can look up tables and rows in that file when you ask, and turn the results into a normal answer in the chat.

What this MCP server does

You point this helper at one SQLite database file on your computer. When you ask a question about that data, your AI uses this helper to peek at the structure of the file, such as which tables and columns exist. The helper then runs a read only query, gets the rows back, and hands them to your AI. Your AI turns those rows into a plain answer, a small list, or a summary right in the chat. If you ask for something that would change the data, the helper refuses and explains why.

What you can do with it

  • See which tables and views are inside your database file
  • Inspect the columns, types, keys, and indexes of a table
  • Get the full structure of the database as text
  • Run read only SELECT and EXPLAIN queries on your data
  • Cap how many rows come back so the chat does not overflow
  • Get clear error messages that help the AI fix a bad query

Try asking your AI

  • “What tables are in my database?”
  • “Describe the employees table.”
  • “How many orders were placed last month?”
  • “Show me the top 10 customers by total spend.”

What it gives back to you

You get normal chat answers built from real rows in your file: counts, lists, small tables, and short summaries. If you ask for a lot of rows, it stops at a set limit and warns you so you can narrow the question. When something goes wrong, you see a short explanation instead of a made up answer. It never changes anything in your file.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python installed on your computer
  • The uv tool if you want the easy uvx way to run it (the README shows how)
  • The full path to your SQLite database file, like C:/Users/You/Documents/database.db
  • An AI app that supports MCP, such as Claude Desktop or Cursor

Good to know

It is built to only read, so it will not change or delete anything in your database file, but it can still show private data in the chat, so be careful with databases that hold sensitive information.

Install it with your AI

Add SQLite MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check SQLite MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
