MinIO AIops MCP server
by AIops-tools
Lets your AI check and manage MinIO storage: capacity, exposure, healing, buckets, and users.
This is a helper for people who run MinIO, the storage system often used in homelabs and small self-hosted setups. It lets your AI look at how your storage is doing and make careful changes, like setting a bucket policy or a quota. It is handy if you look after a MinIO server yourself and want a hand keeping it tidy and safe.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to your MinIO storage, so it can look things up or make changes there when you ask. You install it once, point it at your MinIO server, and then just talk to your AI as usual.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question about your MinIO storage, like why it is filling up or which buckets are open to the public. Your AI uses this helper, which talks to your MinIO server over its usual connections. The helper runs the check, gathers the results, and hands them back to your AI. Your AI then explains what it found in plain words. If you ask it to change something, like a bucket policy, it does that too and records what it did so it can be undone.
What you can do with it
- Find out why your storage is filling up and what to do about it
- See which buckets are open to the public or missing encryption
- Check which old file versions and half-finished uploads are wasting space
- Look at healing status and how many more drive failures each set can take
- Set a bucket policy, versioning, lifecycle rule, or quota
- List users, groups, and policies, and spot risky access
- Undo a change you made earlier
Try asking your AI
- “Why is my MinIO storage filling up?”
- “Which of my buckets are publicly readable or writable?”
- “Show me buckets with old versions that never expire”
- “Set versioning on the photos bucket and tell me what it was before”
What it gives back to you
You get back clear answers in the chat: lists of buckets with scores and rankings, capacity numbers, healing status, and short findings with a cause and a suggested action. For changes, it tells you what it did and what the setting was before, so you can undo it. Everything is written in everyday words, not raw data.
Before you start
What you need
- A MinIO server you can reach (single-node or distributed)
- An access key and secret key for that server (admin-capable if you want quota and server info)
- Python with uv or pipx to install the tool
- A master password to unlock the encrypted credential store
Good to know
It can change or delete things on your MinIO server, so give it an access key with only the permissions you are comfortable with, and check before letting it delete anything.
