AltText.ai MCP server

by alttextai · official

Let your AI write image alt text, translate it, and manage your AltText.ai image library for you.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Write alt text for this picture”, the AltText.ai MCP server connects it to AltText.ai, and you get back alt text or image list.

This is a small helper made by AltText.ai that connects your AI assistant to your AltText.ai account. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI in plain words to write alt text for an image, translate it into another language, or tidy up your image library. It is handy for anyone who posts images online and has to write those little descriptions for every one.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program you connect once, and it gives your AI a new skill. This one gives your AI a direct line to your AltText.ai account, so it can create alt text, look up images, and make changes there when you ask. You stay in the chat; the helper does the talking to AltText.ai behind the scenes.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like write alt text for this picture. Your AI passes that request to this helper, which talks to the AltText.ai service using your account. AltText.ai writes the alt text and sends it back, and the helper hands it to your AI. Your AI then shows you the result in the chat, and if you asked for a change in your library, that change is made too.

What you can do with it

  • Generate alt text for an image from a web link
  • Generate alt text from an image file on your computer
  • Translate an existing image's alt text into another language
  • Search and list the images in your AltText.ai library
  • Update the alt text, tags, or details of an image
  • Delete an image from your library
  • Scan a web page and queue alt text for images that are missing it
  • Process a CSV file of image links in one go

Try asking your AI

  • “How many AltText.ai credits do I have left?”
  • “Generate alt text for https://example.com/photo.jpg”
  • “Search my images for product photo”
  • “Generate alt text for images missing it on https://example.com”

What it gives back to you

You get answers and results right in the chat. That can be a piece of alt text, a list of images, details about one image, or a short note that a change was made. For bulk jobs like a CSV file or a web page scan, the work is queued in the background, so you check progress later by asking your AI to list your images.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 22 or newer installed on your computer
  • An AltText.ai account
  • An AltText.ai API key (a kind of password for apps; you get it from your AltText.ai account page)
  • An MCP-compatible app such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, or Windsurf

Good to know

Writing and translating alt text uses your AltText.ai credits, and some actions can overwrite existing alt text or delete images, so check your balance and be sure before you ask for changes.
