skimread MCP server

by avikchakraborty060-create

Lets your AI skim big files and noisy command output instead of reading everything, while keeping the full text on hand.

skimread is a small helper that sits between your AI coding agent and the two things that eat up the most space: long files and chatty command output. Instead of your AI reading a 2,000 line file to find one function, it gets a map of the file with line numbers and reads only the part it needs. It is handy for anyone who uses a coding agent and wants it to spend less time and money reading things it does not need.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. This one gives your AI a way to skim files and command output before reading them in full. When you ask your AI to look at a big file or run your tests, it can call this helper first and get back a short map or a short summary instead of the whole thing.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI to look at a large file or run a noisy command like your test suite. The AI calls this helper instead of reading or running things directly. The helper makes a short outline of the file with line ranges, or a short digest of the command output that keeps the errors and failures. Your AI reads that short version, then asks for just the lines it needs. The full original text is saved on your computer, so nothing is lost and your AI can always pull up any part later.

What you can do with it

  • Get a map of a big file with line ranges instead of the whole file
  • Read just one section of a file by line numbers
  • Run your tests and see only the failures, not the 1,500 passing lines
  • Run a build or install and see only the warnings and errors that matter
  • Pull up the full saved output of any command from earlier
  • Search inside a saved output for a specific word or error
  • See how many tokens and dollars this has saved you so far

Try asking your AI

  • “Look at src/server.py and tell me what functions it has”
  • “Run the test suite and show me what failed”
  • “Run npm install and tell me if there are any problems”
  • “Show me lines 142 to 229 of src/server.py”

What it gives back to you

You get short answers in the chat: a list of functions or sections with line numbers, a summary of test failures with the error messages, or a short digest of a build or install. Every digest ends with a handle like skimread show 42 that your AI can use to pull up the full output or a slice of it. Nothing is thrown away, so if you need the full text it is always one step away.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.9 or newer on your computer
  • pipx, uv, or pip to install it (pipx is recommended and takes 30 seconds)
  • A coding agent that can run shell commands or speak MCP, such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or Aider

Good to know

It saves the full output of commands you run to a folder on your computer, so anything sensitive printed by those commands is stored there for up to 7 days.

Install it with your AI

Add skimread MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check skimread MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
