EU VIES VAT checker MCP server
by bartosz-kuc
Check any EU VAT number with your AI and get a proof number you can keep for your records.
This is a small helper that lets your AI check EU VAT numbers against VIES, the official European Commission service. It is handy if you send invoices to businesses in other EU countries and need to confirm their VAT number first. You run it on your own computer, and it talks straight to the European Commission.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to VIES, the EU's VAT number checker, so when you ask about a VAT number, the AI can actually look it up instead of guessing. You install it once, and after that you just ask in normal words.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like check this German VAT number before I invoice. The AI passes your request to this helper, which sends it to the European Commission's VIES service. VIES checks the number against the national tax database of that country and sends back an answer. The helper hands that answer to your AI, which shows it to you in the chat. If you also give your own VAT number, the answer includes a consultation number you can save as proof of the check.
What you can do with it
- Check whether an EU VAT number is valid
- See the registered name and address of a business when VIES has them
- Get a consultation number as proof of the check
- List the country codes VIES supports, including Northern Ireland
- Confirm tricky codes like Greece being EL and not GR
Try asking your AI
- “Verify German VAT DE143454214 before I invoice them”
- “Check this VAT number and give me a consultation number, my VAT is PL7393933151”
- “Is this French VAT number still active”
- “What is the EU VAT country code for Greece”
What it gives back to you
You get a clear valid or invalid answer in the chat. When VIES has them, you also see the registered business name and address. If you passed your own VAT number, the answer includes a consultation number you can copy and keep with the invoice. If a national database is offline, it tells you that instead of pretending the number is valid or invalid.
Before you start
What you need
- Python 3.10 or newer on your computer
- The server files from the project page
- An AI app that supports MCP, like Claude Desktop or Claude Code
Good to know
The consultation number only comes back if your own VAT number is currently active in VIES, so check yours first if you need that proof.
