Chisel MCP server
by ckanthony
Lets your AI read, search, and edit files in one folder safely, without wasting tokens.

Chisel is a small helper program that gives your AI a safe, tidy way to work with files on your computer. It lets the AI look inside big files, find things, and make careful edits, but only inside one folder you choose. It is handy for anyone who wants their AI to help with documents or code without risking the rest of their machine.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. Chisel is that helper, and its skill is working with files in a folder you pick. When you ask your AI to look at or change a file, the AI asks Chisel to do it, and Chisel does the work inside the safe folder.
What this MCP server does
You point Chisel at one folder on your computer, called the root. When you ask your AI something about a file, the AI sends a request to Chisel. Chisel checks that the file is inside that folder, then reads, searches, or edits it. For edits, Chisel only sends the changed lines instead of the whole file, which saves a lot of space and money. If something looks wrong, Chisel refuses and leaves your file untouched.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Read parts of a large file instead of the whole thing
- Search for words or patterns inside files
- Edit a file by sending only the changed lines
- Create new files and folders inside the root
- Move or rename files within the root
- Run safe, pre-approved commands like grep, sed, and find
- Work in read-only mode when you do not want changes
Try asking your AI
- “Find all the headings in docs/api.md”
- “Show me the section under Endpoints in docs/api.md”
- “Change GET /v1/items to GET /v2/items in docs/api.md”
- “List every file in the data folder”
What it gives back to you
You get back short, focused answers in the chat: the lines that matched your search, the section you asked for, or a simple confirmation that an edit was made. If an edit does not fit the file, Chisel says so and your file stays as it was. You never see the whole file dumped into the chat unless you ask for it.
Before you start
What you need
- The Chisel program, downloaded from its Releases page or run with Docker
- A folder on your computer to use as the root
- A secret password you make up, set as MCP_APP_SECRET
- An MCP client, like the Claude desktop app, set up to talk to Chisel
Good to know
Chisel can change or delete files inside the folder you point it at, so use a folder you are happy for your AI to work in, and consider read-only mode when you only want to look.
Install it with your AI
Add Chisel MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Chisel MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who wants their AI to help with files or code in one folder, especially people working with large documents or codebases.
