MySQL MCP server
by dave-wind
Lets your AI look inside a MySQL database and answer questions with read-only queries.

This is a small helper that connects your AI to a MySQL database in a safe, read-only way. You ask a question in plain words, and the AI looks up the answer in the database for you. It is handy for anyone who needs numbers or lists from a database but does not want to write SQL by hand.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to a MySQL database, so the AI can look up tables and run read-only queries when you ask. You stay in the chat; the helper does the database work behind the scenes.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question about your data, like how many orders came in last month. The AI uses this helper to look at the database structure, so it knows which tables and columns exist. Then it writes a read-only query and sends it through the helper to your MySQL database. The database sends back the rows, and the AI turns them into a clear answer for you. Everything happens inside a read-only transaction, so nothing in your database gets changed.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Ask questions about your data in plain words and get answers
- List the tables in your database
- See the columns and data types of any table
- Run read-only SELECT queries without writing SQL yourself
- Get counts, totals, and simple summaries from your data
- Explore an unfamiliar database to understand its structure
Try asking your AI
- “What tables are in this database?”
- “Show me the columns in the orders table.”
- “How many customers signed up last month?”
- “List the ten most recent orders with their totals.”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, written in normal language. The AI can show you lists of tables, column names and types, or the actual rows from your query. It can also summarize numbers, like totals or counts, instead of dumping raw data. Nothing is changed in your database, so you only ever get information back.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js version 18 or newer installed on your computer
- Access to a MySQL database, with its address, username, and password
- An AI app that supports MCP servers, like the Claude desktop app
Good to know
It can only read your data, not change it, but it will still see whatever the database user you give it is allowed to see, so use a limited account if your data is sensitive.
Install it with your AI
Add MySQL MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check MySQL MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who needs quick answers from a MySQL database without writing SQL, such as analysts, support staff, and managers.
