Groundhog is a helper that lets your AI assistant look things up on the web and read web pages for you. It uses a real Chrome browser behind the scenes, so it can open pages that normally block simple tools. It is handy if you want your AI to gather information from the internet and give you clean, trustworthy results.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. Here, Groundhog connects your AI to the web through a real Chrome browser, so the AI can search, read pages, and do research when you ask. Think of it as giving your AI a pair of eyes and hands on the internet.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI to find or read something on the web. The AI passes your request to Groundhog. Groundhog opens a real Chrome browser, goes to the page, and reads what a human would actually see. It strips out any hidden text that could trick the AI, and it gives back clean text along with a receipt showing where the information came from. Then your AI uses that clean text to answer you.

What you can do with it

  • Search the web for pages on a topic
  • Read a specific web page and get its main text
  • Do research across several pages and get the key passages
  • Get a receipt for each source so you can check where information came from
  • Avoid being fooled by hidden text on web pages
  • Read pages that block simple tools, using a real browser

Try asking your AI

  • “Search the web for the latest news on electric cars”
  • “Read this page and tell me what it says: https://example.com/article”
  • “Research the pros and cons of remote work and give me the main points”
  • “Find information about the new tax rules and summarize it for me”

What it gives back to you

You get back clean text from the pages, usually as Markdown. If you asked for research, you get the most relevant passages from several sources. Each source comes with a receipt that includes a content hash, the web address, the language, word count, and sometimes the author and date. You also get a list of any hidden text that was removed, so you know if something suspicious was on the page.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Claude desktop app or another MCP-compatible AI client
  • Docker or Podman installed on your computer (for the browser container)
  • uvx (comes with Python) to run the server

Good to know

Groundhog reads web pages but does not change anything on your computer or online; however, it does start a browser container the first time, which uses some resources.

Install it with your AI

Add Groundhog MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
