Google Sheets MCP server
by freema
Lets your AI read, write, and format your Google Sheets for you, right from the chat.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Google Sheets. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to look things up in a spreadsheet, add rows, tidy up formatting, or build a new sheet, and it will actually do it. It is handy for anyone who spends part of their day in spreadsheets and would rather just describe what they want.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your files or your apps. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill, in this case a connection to Google Sheets. So when you ask about a spreadsheet, your AI passes the request to this helper, the helper talks to Google, and the answer comes back into your chat.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about a Google Sheet, like reading a range of cells or adding a new row. The AI sends that request to this helper program running quietly in the background. The helper signs in to Google using a special key you set up once, then reads or changes the spreadsheet you pointed at. The result, whether it is cell values, a summary, or a confirmation that something changed, comes back to you in the chat. You never have to open the sheet yourself unless you want to check it.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Read values from any range of cells in a spreadsheet
- Write or update values in one or many ranges at once
- Append new rows to the bottom of a table
- Create a brand new spreadsheet or add a new sheet tab
- Format cells with colours, borders, fonts, and number styles
- Insert or delete rows and columns
- Add charts and conditional formatting rules
Try asking your AI
- “Read the sales figures from Sheet1 A1 to D20 and tell me the total”
- “Add a new row to my expenses sheet with today's date and a 25 euro lunch”
- “Create a new spreadsheet called Q3 Budget with three tabs: Income, Costs, Summary”
- “Make the header row of my tracker bold with a light grey background”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain chat text: lists of cell values, short summaries, or a confirmation that a change was made. If you asked it to read data, it will often show the rows as a small table or bullet list. If you asked it to write or format, it tells you what it changed and where. You can always open the sheet to see the result yourself.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js version 20 or newer on your computer
- A Google Cloud project with the Google Sheets API turned on (free, but a few clicks to set up)
- A service account key file from Google (a small JSON file that acts like a password for the helper)
- The email address from that key file shared on your spreadsheet as an Editor
Good to know
This helper can change and delete things in your spreadsheets, so it is worth double checking before you let it clear or remove data, and you may want to turn on read-only mode while you get used to it.
Install it with your AI
Add Google Sheets MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Google Sheets MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Office workers, analysts, and anyone who uses Google Sheets daily and wants to ask their AI to handle the reading, writing, and tidying for them.
