Engram MCP server

by HBarefoot

Give your AI a long-term memory that stays on your computer, so it remembers what you told it before.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Remember that our team uses JWT tokens with 24-hour expiry”, on your own computer the Engram MCP server works with engram, and you get back your AI remembers.

Engram is a memory helper for your AI. It lets your AI remember things you told it in earlier chats, like your preferences, decisions, and facts about your work. It is handy for anyone who is tired of repeating the same background information every time they start a new conversation.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It forgets everything the moment you close the window. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something. Engram is that helper, and its skill is memory: it saves notes your AI can look up later, all on your own machine.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI something worth keeping, like a preference or a decision you made. Your AI passes that note to Engram, which saves it in a small local database on your computer. Later, when you ask a related question, your AI asks Engram to search its notes and gets the most relevant ones back. Engram also watches for secrets like passwords or keys and blocks them before they get saved. Over time it cleans up duplicates and flags notes that contradict each other.

What you can do with it

  • Store facts, preferences, decisions, and outcomes your AI should remember
  • Recall relevant memories when you ask a question in a later chat
  • Search memories by category, tag, or time period
  • Vote a memory as helpful or unhelpful so recall improves
  • Delete a specific memory you no longer want kept
  • Export a tidy block of context to paste into a system prompt
  • Detect and block secrets like API keys before they are saved

Try asking your AI

  • “Remember that our team uses JWT tokens with 24-hour expiry.”
  • “What authentication approach did we decide on?”
  • “Forget the note about the old database password.”
  • “Give me a short summary of everything you remember about this project.”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in plain chat, drawn from your saved notes. When your AI recalls something, it usually shows the memory text and sometimes the category or confidence. Lists of memories come back as short items you can read. When it saves or deletes something, it tells you what it did.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 18 or newer installed on your computer
  • The Engram package installed with npm
  • An MCP-capable AI app like Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, or Cline

Good to know

Engram saves notes on your computer and can delete them when asked, so be careful about what you tell it to remember, even though it tries to block secrets automatically.

Install it with your AI

Add Engram MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Engram MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
