JDBC MCP server
by igorolv
Lets your AI read your PostgreSQL, Oracle or SQL Server database and answer questions about your data.

This is a small helper program that connects your AI assistant to a relational database, like PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, Firebird or SQLite. It only reads, so your AI can look at tables, run safe queries and explain what is going on, but it cannot change or delete anything. It is handy if you often need answers from a database but do not want to write SQL yourself.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to a database, so it can look up tables, run read-only queries and explain the results when you ask. You set it up once, and after that your AI can use it whenever a question is about your data.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question in plain words, like how many orders shipped last month. The AI uses this helper to look at your database structure, find the right tables and write a safe read-only query. The helper runs that query against your database and sends the rows back. Your AI then turns those rows into a clear answer for you. It can also explain why a query is slow, suggest indexes and show you how tables are connected.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Ask questions about your data in plain English and get answers
- Explore an unfamiliar database and see how its tables relate
- Check a SQL query before running it and see which tables it reads
- Find out why a slow query is slow and which index might help
- Spot missing, unused or duplicate indexes in your database
- Look at sample rows from a table to understand the data
- See how your application usually joins tables together
Try asking your AI
- “How many orders did each region ship last month?”
- “What does the billing schema contain, and how are its tables related?”
- “Why is this report query slow, and which index would help?”
- “Find missing and redundant indexes in the orders schema.”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, written in normal language. Depending on what you asked, that can be a table of numbers, a list of tables and columns, a short explanation of a query plan, or a summary of index problems. If a result is very large, the helper marks it as shortened so you know there is more.
Before you start
What you need
- Java 21 or newer on your computer (or use the Docker image instead)
- A file called connections.json with the address, username and password of each database
- A read-only database user is strongly recommended
- An MCP client like Claude Desktop, Cursor or VS Code with Copilot
Good to know
It is built to be read-only, but you should still connect it with a read-only database user and keep your connections.json file private, since it holds your database passwords.
Install it with your AI
Add JDBC MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check JDBC MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who needs answers from a company database but does not want to write SQL, such as analysts, support staff, product managers and developers exploring an unfamiliar system.
