SQL Analyzer MCP server

by j4c0bs

Check, fix and convert SQL queries with your AI before you run them.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Check this SQL query for errors before I run it”, the SQL Analyzer MCP server works in steps: reads your query, then finds problems or changes it, then lists tables and columns, and you get back plain answer in your chat.

This is a small helper that lets your AI check SQL queries, spot mistakes, and translate them from one database style to another. It is handy if you write SQL for MySQL, PostgreSQL, BigQuery or similar systems and want a second pair of eyes before you run anything. You do not need to install a database for it to work.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another tool. This one gives your AI a SQL checker and translator, built on a free library called SQLGlot. So when you paste a query and ask about it, your AI can actually test and rewrite it instead of guessing.

What this MCP server does

You paste a SQL query into your chat and ask your AI to check it, convert it, or explain which tables and columns it touches. Your AI sends the query to this helper, which reads it the way a database would. The helper reports back whether the query is valid, where any error sits, or what the same query looks like in another database style. Your AI then shows you the result in plain chat, so you can fix or copy it. It also keeps a list of the SQL styles it knows about, so your AI can pick the right one.

What you can do with it

  • Check a SQL query for syntax errors before you run it
  • Convert a query from MySQL to PostgreSQL or another style
  • List all tables and CTEs a query reads from
  • List all columns a query uses and which table they belong to
  • See which SQL dialects are supported
  • Ask your AI to explain a query using its table and column references

Try asking your AI

  • “Can you check this SQL for errors? SELECT * FROM users WHERE id = 1”
  • “Convert this MySQL query to PostgreSQL: SELECT IFNULL(name, 'unknown') FROM users”
  • “Which tables does this query touch? WITH recent AS (SELECT * FROM orders) SELECT * FROM recent JOIN customers ON customers.id = recent.customer_id”
  • “List the columns used in this query and which table each one comes from”

What it gives back to you

You get short answers in the chat: a yes or no on whether the SQL is valid, an error message with the line and column if something is wrong, or a rewritten query in the style you asked for. For table and column questions, you get a clean list with names, aliases and full names. Nothing is changed in any database, because this helper only reads the text of your query.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Claude desktop app (or another AI app that supports MCP servers)
  • uv installed on your computer (a free tool that runs Python programs; the install page on the uv site walks you through it)

Good to know

It only reads the text of your query, so it will not run anything or change your database, but avoid pasting queries that contain real passwords or private customer data.

Install it with your AI

Add SQL Analyzer MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check SQL Analyzer MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
