SimpleMem MCP server

by jcdickinson

Give your AI a long-term notebook where it can save notes and find them later by meaning, not just keywords.

SimpleMem is a small helper program that gives your AI a memory. Instead of forgetting everything when the chat ends, your AI can save notes to a little database on your computer and look them up later. It is handy if you use Claude for ongoing work and keep repeating yourself about the same project, preferences, or background.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot remember things between conversations or look anything up on its own. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill. SimpleMem is that helper, and its skill is keeping a notebook of memories your AI can write to and search through when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI something worth remembering, like a project detail or a preference. Your AI uses SimpleMem to save that as a memory with a title, description, and tags. Later, when you ask a question, your AI searches those memories by meaning, so it can find the right note even if you use different words. SimpleMem also spots related memories and links them together, so your AI can follow the connections. Everything is stored in a file on your computer.

What you can do with it

  • Save a note your AI can recall in future chats
  • Search your saved notes using plain language
  • Read back a specific memory by its name
  • Update or delete a memory when things change
  • Tag memories so you can group them by topic
  • See which memories are related to each other

Try asking your AI

  • “Remember that our client prefers weekly updates on Fridays”
  • “What do you know about the Henderson project?”
  • “Update the note about our brand colors to include the new green”
  • “Show me memories related to onboarding”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, drawn from the notes your AI saved earlier. When it saves something, it confirms what it stored. When it searches, it shows you the matching memories with their titles and descriptions. If you ask for related memories, it lists the ones connected to a note.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Voyage AI account and API key (a kind of password for apps; Voyage AI gives you one when you sign up)
  • The SimpleMem program installed on your computer
  • An MCP client like Claude Desktop set up to use it

Good to know

This program can save, change, and delete your notes, so be careful with delete requests, and remember it is an experimental project that may have rough edges.

Install it with your AI
