by ktanaka101

Lets your AI run SQL queries and inspect tables in a local DuckDB database file.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to a DuckDB database on your own computer. DuckDB is a database that lives in a single file, handy for looking at data locally. It is useful for anyone who has a data file and wants to ask questions about it in plain English.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to a DuckDB database file on your machine. Once it is set up, your AI can look things up in that database or change it for you when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about your data, like how many rows a table has. Your AI turns that into a SQL query and sends it to this helper. The helper runs the query against your DuckDB file and sends the result back. Your AI then explains the result to you in the chat. It can also create tables or insert data if you allow it.

What you can do with it

  • Ask questions about the data in your DuckDB file
  • List tables and inspect their columns
  • Run SQL queries and see the results
  • Create new tables and add rows
  • Join tables together to answer a question
  • Keep the database safe by running it in read-only mode

Try asking your AI

  • “What tables are in my DuckDB database?”
  • “Show me the first 10 rows of the sales table.”
  • “How many orders were placed last month?”
  • “Create a table called customers with a name and an email column.”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, usually as a short table of rows or a single number. For queries that change data, you get a short message saying it worked. Your AI often adds a sentence or two explaining what the result means.

Before you start

What you need

  • A DuckDB database file on your computer (the server can create one for you)
  • The uv tool installed (a small helper for running Python programs)
  • The Claude desktop app or another AI app that supports MCP servers

Good to know

If you do not use read-only mode, your AI can create, change, or delete data in your database.

Install it with your AI

Add DuckDB MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check DuckDB MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
